residential apartment for mr. v appu at bangalore
this is a residential apartment building consisting of 6 dwelling units. three 2 bedroom flats adn three single bedroom flats. the site measures 15' road side facing south and 90' deep. apart from the front side the rest of the three sides are abutted by private property. bringing in natural light and ventilation into all the spaces for the building at all levels was quite a challenge. the solution to this was to have an open to sky staircase leading to all the levels of the building, into which the bedrooms were opened out to draw in light and ventilation. the opening were strategically placed keeping in mind the visual privacy required. light wells/shafts are also provided at a couple of places to ventilate the toilets and kitchens. 3 cars can be comfortably parked at the ground level along with few 2 wheelers. the two coconut trees that existed at the front side of the plot are still retained. an important decision taken for the opening facing the road was that instead to have openings floor wise, continuous vertical openings are designed in order to create a sense of illusion and keep the viewer guessing the number of floors in the building. these openings are a mix of glased, louvered and fixed windows.
